Dean's Message

CHASS Dean Welcome Message

Javier Clavere Headshot

On behalf of the faculty, staff, and students of the College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences, I extend a warm welcome to one of the most intellectually vital communities at the 91³ÉÈË.

Grounded in 91³ÉÈË's mission of service, discovery, and the sacred worth of every person, our college unites the disciplines that pursue the most enduring human questions - questions of identity and culture, justice and expression, power and beauty, memory and possibility. Whether your interests lie in the arts and creative practice, the study of language, history, and civilization, the life of the mind in philosophy and religious thought, or the social sciences that illuminate how human communities form and endure, you will find both a rigorous home and a genuine community here.

A deep education in the humanities, arts, and social sciences does more than enrich individual lives, it cultivates the capacities that matter most in a complex world: the empathy to lead with humanity, the clarity to reason under uncertainty, and the courage to create with intention. These are not supplementary skills. They are foundational to every vocation, every civic life, and every generation called to meet its moment.

Our faculty are active scholars and practicing artists whose research and creative work animate the classroom from within, bringing live inquiry and genuine discovery, not merely received knowledge, to every course. Our students carry that spirit well beyond campus: presenting original research at national conferences, producing work for public audiences, and forging careers grounded in purpose and craft.

I invite you to engage fully with all that our college offers - our programs, our scholarship, our cultural events, and above all, our people. Attend an exhibition opening, a concert, or a theatrical performance. Come to a lecture, sit in on a class, or simply stop by and introduce yourself. Whatever has brought you here, the most meaningful next step is to become part of what we are building together.

Dr. Kevin Vichcales
Interim Dean, College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences
